This is the second Aeons Of Ashes Album I’ve reviewed since I started reviewing again, the first one being their newest EP “Currents”, which I found great. Aeons Of Ashes is a very unique Metal band from Austria consisting of six talented musicians. This is a 2023 album titled “The Wasteland Chronicles”, which is their second full length album to date.
At its core, “The Wasteland Chronicles" is very melodic and Modern sounding atmospheric Death Metal. I can’t really compare them to any other bands as they have a sound all their own. It’s firmly in the melodic Death Metal realm, but there is a ton of almost technical Metal moments in the sound here, mostly just because the band is full of such great musicians. I don’t think they are trying to be this technical, they’re just that good. There’s a lot of experimentation with sounds, a lot of unique and clever ideas and it’s just epic in its overall sound. The music here is catchy, and a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of bands that are admittedly good, but sound like a million other bands. The drums are fucking insane! Holy shit! Very precise, very powerful. The vocals run the gamut from a melo-death style to a guttural Death style to even some Black metal-esque screaming. The lyrics apparently are inspired by some sort of role-playing game and interactive storytelling thing the band did called Wasteland 2570. I will add a link to the website down below so you can check it out. The album and website seem to all tie in together. Listen to the album and go to the website that involves videos, pen and paper style RPG elements and community participation. It seems fun! The site says it was never finished and that it is an ongoing entity, so check that out! The lyrics of the story and album seem to center around life, inner struggles and deep exploration of the occult. The production, mixing and mastering of the album is superbly done and it’s a pleasure to listen to. There are some sound effects here that sound stunning through a nice pair of headphones!
The cover art is simple, just showing a symbolic “W”, which I’m sure stands for Wasteland. It has the band's logo and album title. Inside of the digifile I got is a stunning piece of (I think) CGI art. It’s a dark and eerie scene of what looks like a prison or mental asylum which seems to be abandoned. It has a point of view like you are looking at it from a railroad track that travels off to a distant woodland. It’s like you are near some trees which overhand the tracks looking at that scene. Off to the left is another abandoned building and some dead trees. The wooded area in the background is draped in a muted purplish fog and there’s electric power lines that probably power nothing at his point! This art spans three pages and is simply awesome to look at and let your imagination roam as you listen to the album.
“The Wasteland Chronicles” is perfect if you’re a Metalhead looking for something unique and different. I can tell a lot of work and care was put into this project, and I am impressed at the final results. Check this out, then get yourself the “Currents” EP as well! Highly recommended!
