Lex Legion is like the most super of supergroups that I’ve ever seen! Consisting of past original members of King Diamond and the vocalist of Pagan’s Mind, I knew this album would appeal to this huge fan of King Diamond. I mean, come on! Andy La Rocque! Pete Blakk! Hal Patino and Mikkey Dee??? Fuck yeah! This album is way more King Diamond than the King Diamond band is now!
Honestly, “Lex Legion” really, reminds me of King Diamond’s album “Them”, and deservedly so. I mean, most if not all of these musicians aside from the vocalist played in King Diamond at or near that time. It’s hard to explain the sound, but if you have heard “Them”, you will know. It’s not Thrash Metal, not regular Traditional Heavy Metal… it has a sound all its own. It’s fast, aggressive, very darkly atmospheric and sort of operatic. These guys are among the best musicians in the business, and they haven’t lost a thing over time. “Lex Legion” is full of catchy and memorable riffs and even if you are an old man like me, you will find it hard not to bang your head along with the music. The one band member I was not familiar with is vocalist Nils K. Rue. I have heard of his other band Pagan’s Mind for decades but never bothered to check them out as I’m not a huge fan of Power Metal, but he rules as a vocalist here. He has his own vocal style very rooted in an operatic Power Metal style, but here and there he does use a King Diamond-esque falsetto style that is beyond good. The lyrics are well-written and touch upon themes like death, darkness, mysticism and more. The production on this is a beast and oh, so good!
The layout and design of the jewel case is nice and dark. The cover is a photo of the five band members surrounding the band’s logo. The faces are streaked in a way that kind of reminds me of the cover of Mercyful Fate’s “Melissa” album. I don’t know if this was done purposefully or not, but it’s a nice effect. Inside of the fold out booklet,
you will find all of the album lyrics, band and album info and another large group band photo.
Run, don’t walk to wherever you buy your albums from and buy “Lex Legion” now. King Diamond has promised another album for over half a decade, but we have a very worthy album in this one to tide us over until then. And truth be told, the King will have a hard time topping this. This warrants my highest recommendation possible!
