I became a fan of Ereb Altor way back when their debut album “By Honor” came out. At the time I was very into folk metal and “By Honor” was a unique Folk Metal album released when either those types of bands were silly sounding or they sounded the same. I am pretty sure I bought all of the albums that followed but fell behind on the new album “Halsingemorker” that was released early last year. I rectified that by buying it and reviewing it for my little ole blog now.
“Halsingemoreker” is at its core a folk black metal album with sweeping melodies and epic songwriting and playing. It can be fast and quite black metal influenced, but more often it’s mid paced with a heavy emphasis on atmosphere. All four members are proficient musicians and there’s not a bad second on the entire album. The drums really stand out to me and are played with the precision of a well-oiled machine gun. The bass has a heavy presence, and the guitar melodies are memorable. Keyboards are present, but when they are used, they are more in the background. The vocals are usually clean, but Mats uses a pretty awesome black metal style that goes well with the faster moments on the album. The lyrics are in Swedish and English and spin tales of nature and Norse mythology. The production of the album was given a lot of attention, and the result was a nice, clean sounding album.
The cover art is beautiful and shows a wraith-like entity hovering above water with trees, a few fires burning and an ominous looking sky in the background. The Ereb Altor logo rules and incorporates images of ravens and Celtic knots. The sixteen-page booklet includes all of the lyrics, band and album information and more artwork and photography.
My love for folk metal has dwindled over the years, but I keep up with the great bands that offered something new and unique and Ereb Altor achieved just that again with “Halsingemorker”. They are a much-respected band in the genre, and deservedly so. This grants my highest recommendation possible.
