Stormspell has unearthed another gem for all of us to appreciate now in these modern/end times. Dascuri is a band started by two sisters from my home state of Michigan. Detroit, to be precise. In the early 80’s the two sisters moved to Iowa and hooked up with the rest of the band and made a split 7” with a band called Phantasy and released one independent cassette in 1992. What we have here with “Tear Down The Walls” is a restored and remastered version of those songs that quite simply blow me away.
At its heart, “Tear Down The Walls” is total 80's styled hard rock and heavy metal. The vocals are dripping with female class and as there are three female vocalists in the band, the gang vocals are beautiful together and are the standout aspect of the album. The lead vocals remind me somewhat of Jello Biafra at times. Not that they are punk at all, but she has that wavy voice Jello has. It kind of reminds me of Belinda Carlisle too. The music reminds me a bit of early Lita Ford, early Burning Starr and Joan Jett. It has a glam sound at times along with a few great ballads and at other times it’s a speed-fest with impressive guitarwork. The lyrics are about sex, love, street life and more sex. The remastering and restoration on these thirty-four-year-old tracks is amazing, and it sounds like these songs were just released today. Amazing.
The cover art is cool and shows two female warriors astride horses with swords in hand. A large castle looms in the background and the color scheme is pleasing to the eye. Inside of the booklet you will find all of the lyrics, a nice band biography, band photos and the band and album info. After reading the booklet I found out that two of the seven members of the band have passed away recently. Sad. But their spirit lives on with the music and this reissue!
Nothing makes me happier than seeing labels finding truly old great metal gems that were almost unknown and sprucing them up and throwing them out there for us to enjoy now. “Tear Down The Walls” should have made the band a household name back in the day. Unfortunately, it was 1992 and this music was kind of on its way out then. If you want to take a break from all the death and black metal and mellow out a bit, this is what you need in your ear holes. Highly recommended!
